What a Doula IS: A doula is a woman that is experienced in childbirth that provides emotional, physical and educational support to her client families usually in the last trimester and early post partum period. Doulas have a unique understanding of a womans desire to protect her birth experience as it is the most powerful and intimate experience of her life. She attends the laboring family as support for both the mother and the father. She provides emotional support for dad and mom as well as physical comfort measures for the mother to help her through her labor. A doula tries to help facilitate an environment friendly to birthing bringing positive and loving energy to the birth of a child. A Doula tries to help a family achieve an open communication between them and their Midwife or OB.
What a Doula IS NOT: A doula is NOT a medical caregiver and does not do cervical or Fetal Heart Tone checks. A doula does not offer medical advice. A doula cannot advocate FOR her clients but rather provide them with the information they need to advocate for themselves. A doula does not, ever, replace the Dad/ partner but rather helps him /her become more of an active participant in the birth process.
